Fire officials in northern Arizona are burning several slash piles of wood and debris in a canyon within Prescott city limits near several homes. The prescribed burns will continue through Thursday if conditions permit.
This isn’t the first time crews have conducted a prescribed burn within the city, but Fire Marshal Don Devendorf said this treatment is different.
"What makes this unique is the topography," he explained. "This is a canyon right in the middle of the city limits surrounded by homes. Thickly brushed."
Typically crews in Prescott will physically haul brush out of an urban area, but in this case that wasn’t cost effective. Devendorf added the city will consider treatments like this in the future if weather permits and crews have the proper fire treatment experience.
