Teachers who learn how to recognize child abuse and stop it may soon get continuing education credits after a bill unanimously passed the state’s House Education Committee.
Supporters of the legislation say the bill would reward educators and keep predators on alert. Daphne Young is with ChildHelp, a nonprofit organization that supports victims of child abuse.
"This bill is beyond continuing education for teachers, it’s an issue of public safety for the children of Arizona. A vote to support it is supporting a productive, predator-free environment through greater awareness," Young said.
Young says abused children can suffer from lower GPAs, increased school absences, and decreased reading ability. The bill now goes to the full House for a debate.
