New Mexico Official Puts The Brakes On SunZia Project

New Mexico’s Land Commissioner is putting the brakes on a major transmission line project.

The $2 billion SunZia project would carry electricity generated from renewable resources in New Mexico and Arizona to markets across the West.

But New Mexico Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn is suspending the project for 60 days, to give his office time to look at how any further development would affect state trust lands.

The Land Office says nearly 30 percent of the proposed line would cross state land.

Federal officials last week gave the SunZia project the green light.

The approval came after months of talks about the route of the line, near the White Sands Missile Range in southern New Mexico.
