Senate Republicans are maneuvering to put Democrats on the record in opposition to legislation that would fund the Department of Homeland Security and overturn the president’s executive action on immigration.
President Barack Obama is countering by hosting an Oval Office meeting with a half-dozen young immigrants that are protected by his policies. The GOP’s legislation would subject the president’s visitors to eventual deportation.
Senate Republican leaders indicated repeated votes on the measure were likely, and the results wouldn’t change. But conservatives in the House, led by Arizona Rep. Matt Salmon, do not appear ready to back down.
Salmon said the measure being discussed is the conservatives' best offer.
But Salmon’s view appears to be in the minority. Most believe Congress will find a way to approve DHS funding, even if it means passing a short-term extension ahead of the deadline before a final deal can be reached.
