A Senate panel voted yesterday to increase legislative terms by two years.
Instead of running for reelection every two years, Sen. John Kavanagh’s bill would provide lawmakers with four-year terms. He said the current system gives the state too many legislators who are unfamiliar with the process.
“It takes a while to not only learn about bills and things, but the processes and the rules. So I think for the first year, maybe the first two years, legislators are far less effective than your average experienced legislator,” Kavanagh said.
Opponents of the bill say the current system promotes greater accountability.
