Governor Doug Ducey has appointed a new director to the Department of Child Safety. The man who discovered that more than 6,500 reports of child abuse were not investigated will now head the department.
Greg McKay will take over from Charles Flanagan, who was the agency's first director. He was appointed to the newly formed Department of Child Safety last year by former Governor Jan Brewer, after it came out that the former Child Protective Services Agency had ignored more than 6,500 complaints of child abuse.
McKay promises to protect as many children as possible in his new role.
“Starting now, seeing and protecting children is job one every day," McKay said. "Whatever has taken precedent over this mission is to be discarded immediately.”
McKay, a Phoenix Police detective and former foster parent, has headed the Office of Child Welfare Investigations since 2012. Ducey explained he replaced Flanagan because as a new governor he wants to go in a new direction.
