If you have relatives back east you probably already know about the polar vortex that has been freezing them out the last few weeks. But that same phenomenon is causing our temps to spike.
High temperatures in the Valley have been above the 30-year average every day since Super Bowl Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. And even then we hit the average high of 69.
Meteorologist Chris Kuhlman said there’s a cause and effect relationship between the icy cold East Coast temps, and our own.
“When you have the really deep low pressure system over the Eastern U.S., just the way the air masses line up it allows a good warming across the Western U.S., so it’s kind of almost the opposite effect," Kuhlman said.
But Kuhlman said the pattern is about to shift and that by the weekend, we’ll be seeing temperatures that are a little cooler, with even a slight chance of a shower.
But the forecast is still calling for highs at least in the mid-70s through early next week.
