Four Republican lawmakers are opposing the creation of a national monument near the Grand Canyon.
Representatives Paul Gosar, David Schweikert, Trent Franks and Matt Salmon are among the lawmakers who signed a letter urging President Obama not to designate the Grand Canyon’s watershed as a national monument.
They say the area, located just south of the Utah border, is being appropriately managed. Supporters, however, say the designation would not only protect the watershed but also large-diameter trees. The area is known for its grasslands and forest and is used by hunters and ranchers.
