Doctor Says Allergy Season Could Be Severe

Allergy sufferers aren’t likely to get much relief in the coming weeks or months. And one culprit is the beautiful weather we’ve been enjoying lately.

There are a couple of reasons why some people living in the Valley seem to always be suffering from allergies. This year, the blame can be placed on the weather. Lots of rain in January, plus warmer than average temperatures in February means plants are blooming and already pollen counts are high.

"Pollen counts are expected to rise over the next three to four days and then into next few weeks, certainly if not months," said Dr. R. Joseph Mittel, an allergist with the Arizona Asthma and Allergy Institute. "So pollen forecasts should be severe over the next month or two, for sure."

He said another reason why allergies are so bad are all of the non-native plants and grasses. Mittel said they tend to pollinate for months on end, leading to a very lengthy allergy season for some.
