Light-rail construction on 19th Avenue in Phoenix.

Next time you drive along 19 th Avenue near Bethany Home Road, take a moment to look at around. You may not notice it at first, but progress is being made on the future light rail.

Work on the Valley Metro’s northwest extension of the light rail is rolling right along. And construction on at least one busy intersection has been completed.

"And we’re about 95 percent complete in track way installation up to Glendale. Then coming from the south, from Dunlap to Butler, which is about a half a mile, we also have another section of track that has been completed," said Susan Tierney of Valley Metro.

For many living and working in the area, things may feel like they’re moving at a snail’s pace. But Tierney says Valley Metro is actually ahead of schedule. She said trackways will be installed at the intersections at Northern in April and Glendale in August.

The light rail is expected to start running in the spring of 2016.
