A Phoenix city council subcommittee will be reviewing a contract this week for the development planned around the Grand Canal in Phoenix.
The $100,000 contract would fund the design and oversight services from artist Michael Singer to aesthetically enhance the updated sections of canal-side trails running through central Phoenix.
Edward Lebow is the city’s public art director. He said Singer has worked with the city before, adding that officials believe he can provide the big picture thinking and problem solving the project will need.
"Art has been an intrinsic part of what we do in developing large infrastructure here in Phoenix," said Lebow. "And it’s one of the things that has put Phoenix on the map."
If approved by the Parks, Arts, Transparency and Education Subcommittee, the proposal goes before the full city council for a final approval.
