Business Owners Look To Get Relief On Equipment Property Taxes

Three years after a rejection from Arizona voters, business interests in the state are pushing for relief from property taxes on their equipment. Like homeowners, businesses pay taxes on their land and buildings every year, but they also pay property taxes on the value of all equipment annually. Representative J.D. Mesnard said that hampers the purchase of new equipment.

“If you want someone to invest in these things more, which obviously creates jobs and promotes economic development, you can't create a system or shouldn't have a system where they are then taxed for it, not only up front, but every year,” Mesnard said.

Under the state Constitution, some equipment is exempt from taxation. With inflation adjustments that amounts to the first $147,000, a figure Mesnard wants to boost to $2.4 million. Voters rejected a nearly identical idea in 2012. However, Mesnard thinks an advertising campaign from the business community would change the voters mind.
