More than 250 kids were kept out of school in Albuquerque on Monday for not having updated vaccinations. District officials say the move was precautionary citing concerns about measles outbreaks in surrounding states.
Officials with Albuquerque Public Schools sent letters home to parents on Feb. 10 informing them of the district’s stricter enforcement of New Mexico’s vaccination standards.
APS’s more than 88,000 students had until last Friday to prove they had the required immunizations, had an appointment to get them, or applied for a state-sanctioned exemption.
Parents can opt out of the state’s immunization requirements for medical and religious reasons. New Mexico does not grant exemptions for personal or philosophical reasons.
