Recent Rain, Warm Temperatures Mean Blooming Wildflowers

The largest wildflower bloom in 10 years is expected near Picacho Peak this weekend. Ellen Bilbrey, with Arizona State Parks, said recent conditions have created the perfect opportunity for the flowers to blossom, especially the Mexican Poppy.

“The main thing that people need to understand is, as soon as the temperature starts going up a little bit again, the flowers are just going to be going crazy at Picacho,” Bilbrey said.

The combination of recent rain and 80 degrees forecasted for Saturday and Sunday, means the flowers will be exceptionally stunning.

“Now that we’re going to get a warm spell coming in after nice, wet time, all the parks are probably going to have tons of flowers. More than they already had. I mean, they already had beautiful flowers,” Bilbrey said.

She said hikers should research the areas they will be visiting if there are certain types of flowers they would like to see, as different plants bloom at different elevations.
