City council members in Tucson voted unanimously to look for a new site to house activists protesting the city’s urban camping laws. The move is parts of a larger effort officials are taking to address homelessness in Tucson.
The city's rules on where and when people can sleep on city property are being challenged in federal court. Right now, city regulations allow people to sleep on sidewalks but only if they have just three belongings with them.
Activists with a group called Occupy Public Land have been camping out in a park downtown in coffin-like pods since October in protest. They say the city’s rules unfairly target people who want to camp in public parks, including the homeless.
