When Phoenix launched its Bike Share program in November, there were about 100 bikes stationed at 27 hubs dotting the downtown area. In the three months since it kicked off, the city now has more than 350 bikes at 40 stations and the plan is to keep expanding.
"I can tell you by late this summer, we will have more than doubled what we currently have in place," said Monica Hernandez with the city of Phoenix. "We will double the number of bicycles; we will double the number of hubs."
Hernandez said the goal is to continue growing the system. As of last week, there were more than 2,200 registered riders.
"We’re also starting to see an increase in the ridership and the membership numbers," she said
Hernandez said the bikes are intended to complement other forms of transportation like the light rail. She said Phoenix plans to expand the program, making it more convenient to navigate the city.
