The Arizona House unanimously approved a bill to protect rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft by allowing them to buy insurance.
Under an amendment from Republican Rep. Karen Fann, the drivers, who use their own cars to transport passengers, will have to buy private insurance and have a commercial endorsement.
“They’re private but then when they are on, they go into straight, full-on commercial coverage. They are allowed to take cash payments and they are allowed to do street-hails, as long as they have that commercial policy,” Fann said.
The amendment, which takes effect next February, calls for identifying stickers and regulations, criminal background checks for drivers and vehicle inspections. It now goes to the state Senate.
