A Navajo Nation police officer and a gunman have been shot and killed in the Four Corners area.
Tribal spokesman Rick Abasta says officers were responding to reports of a man holding his family hostage near Shiprock, in northern New Mexico.
He says the suspect fired at an officer and fled, leading to a manhunt that stretched into northeastern Arizona.
The spokesman says in addition to the tribal officer who was killed, another was wounded and the suspect was killed.
The suspect died in the shooting near Red Valley, Arizona. Police are identifying the suspect as 24-year-old Justin Fowler.
Names of the officers have not been released.
