In recent years, thanks to the interest of some cable networks, the Valley has been the site of a high-profile murder trial — the case of convicted murderer Jodi Arias.
But national attention typically hasn’t accompanied criminal trials here. One clear exception is the 1978 killing of former "Hogan’s Heroes" actor Bob Crane, who was staying in Scottsdale while performing in dinner theatre. Maricopa County prosecutors are sure they got the murderer John Carpenter, a friend of Crane’s, but a jury in 1994 chose not to convict Carpenter.
A new book by Crane’s son, also named Robert, revisits the case. It’s called "Crane: Sex, Celebrity and My Father’s Unsolved Murder." We talked with Crane.
