A planned overpass to route vehicles over the railroad tracks in the town of Maricopa has been given the green light by a federal agency.
The overpass, which would take State Route 347 - or Maricopa Road - over the tracks, has been approved by the Federal Highway Administration, which said it would have no significant environmental impact.
The Arizona Department of Transportation said that was the final approval necessary before it could start buying up the land to complete the project.
The $55 million overpass is intended to reduce traffic backups at the Union Pacific crossing, which is currently at ground level.
ADOT plans to acquire the overpass site over the next several years and start construction in 2020.
