Cesar Chavez Park in Laveen will be getting a new look over the next year. Saturday, the City of Phoenix will break ground on a two-acre dog park, an outdoor amphitheater and two athletic fields. The dog park will open later this year, while the other improvements are scheduled to be completed next spring.
"We have a lot of research saying when you invest in parks, it improves both safety and the value of the houses, so we think it will be a real asset for the Laveen community and for all of Phoenix," said Councilwoman Kate Gallego.
The improvements will be paid for using impact fees and Parks and Preserve Initiative funds. The city estimates it will cost about $3 million to complete. Other city parks on the list for improvements include Hance Park in Central Phoenix and Esteban Park near 32nd street and Roeser.
