Phoenix Food Tax Expires

Shoppers in Phoenix will be paying a little less for their groceries today. At midnight, the city’s 1 percent tax on retail food sales expired.

The Phoenix City Council approved a 2 percent tax in 2010 as the city faced a $277 million budget shortfall. In 2014 lawmakers reduced that to 1 percent.

The tax and its elimination have been controversial since its inception.
