More than 40 million acres in the Western United States have been affected by bark beetles.
The insects have been blamed for attacking trees already weakened by drought. That, in turn, has made the trees more susceptible in wildfire season — which is just around the corner.
We talked with Northern Arizona University Entomologist and Assistant Professor Rich Hofstetter, who has been working on methods to eliminate bark beetles.
