A 41-year-old ex-convict has pleaded not guilty in connection with a Mesa crime spree last month.

The plea came this morning in Maricopa County Superior Court. Ryan Giroux faces charges in connection with a series of shootings, a car theft and a home invasion.

The 23 counts against him include first-degree murder and numerous other crimes. Giroux is accused in a March 18 shooting spree that killed one person and left five others wounded.

The shootings began at a motel where three people were shot.  Another person was shot at a nearby restaurant and two more at an apartment complex.  He was arrested in a vacant apartment near Longmore and Emelita Avenue after police swarmed the area.

Giroux has criminal convictions in three states and has previously done prison time in Arizona.
