Gila River Indian Community Celebrates Official Launch Of Digital TV Station

The Gila River Indian Community celebrated the launch of its own low-power digital TV station Monday. It’s the first tribe to both own and manage this type of facility.

The broadcast from the new station can be picked up on channels 19, 21 and 29. Right now, only one of the channels is operating at full power. The other two will run at half power for the next six to 12 months pending federal approval.

The tribe estimates when all three channels are running at full power, more than 90 percent of people on the reservation with an antenna will be able to pick up the signal.

Tribal officials said the goal is to transmit community based content that’s geared toward tribal culture.
