PHOENIX — Gov. Doug Ducey has vetoed a bill allotting more than $1 million to implement a pilot program to predict where and when crime will happen.
The predictive policing software known as Predpol analyzes historical crime data. Several cities in Maricopa County already use similar crime analytics technology.
Sen. Steve Smith's bill allowed the pilot program to run in Phoenix, Mesa, Maricopa and Sierra Vista. It also moved more than $2 million from a gang and immigration intelligence subaccount to county sheriffs.
In the veto letter released Monday Ducey says he's already directed the Department of Public Safety to look into how to best supplement local law enforcement and border country sheriffs to maximize budget resources for drug and human trafficking crimes.
