How Will Arizona Budget Cuts Affect Grant-Funded Valley Arts Groups?

The new state budget Governor Doug Ducey signed into law earlier this year included millions of dollars in spending cuts. About $1 million-worth of those cuts was to the Arizona Commission on the Arts which, among other things, deals with grants to arts organizations.

In a letter, the commission’s executive director wrote its funding could hit a 30-year low and that he plans to “map out a bold way forward for Arizona’s arts sector.”

For a look at how those cuts may affect a Valley arts group that gets grants from the commission, we turn to David Hemphill, the executive director of Black Theater Troupe in Phoenix.
