Arizona has been struggling with a shortage of medical professionals for a number of years, and the problem is even starker in rural areas.
Efforts are underway to turn the tide. One of those is led by Dr. Carlos Gonzales of the Rural Health Professions program at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Dr. Gonzales is a self-described urban kid who grew to enjoy practicing in rural areas. He said it’s important to get medical students exposed to those cities and towns.
