Fire managers in northern Arizona are planning a series of prescribed burns this weekend. Officials hope to treat almost 5,000 acres of land in the Mormon Lake area near Flagstaff.

Weather permitting, the forest service will begin the treatments on Sunday with burning activity expected to extend through next week.

There are four separate burns planned for the series. The largest will cover almost 3,000 acres near the Happy Jack area south of Flagstaff.

Officials said moderate smoke is expected.
