ADOT Requests Waiver From Requirements Of Real ID Act

The Arizona Department of Transportation is asking the federal government for a waiver from the requirements of the Real ID Act.

Arizona residents need the new licenses with the special security feature in order to board an airplane starting in 2016.

But the state expects the feds not to grant the request because a provision in a new state law requires the Department of Homeland Security to deny ADOT a waiver in order for the agency to start issuing the Real ID compliant licenses.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been updated to reflect ADOT's position on its request to the Department of Homeland Security.
