GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. — Crews have located a break in a pipeline at the Grand Canyon that has renewed calls for visitors to conserve water.
Grand Canyon spokeswoman Kirby-Lynn Shedlowski said repairs will begin Wednesday. Meanwhile, hikers should carry their own drinking water and be prepared to filter creek water.
The pipeline break has cut off water supplies at Roaring Springs and the Cottonwood Campground on the North Kaibab Trail leading to the North Rim.
Shedlowski says the extent of the damage is unknown.
Grand Canyon gets its water from an aquifer that feeds Roaring Springs on the northern end of the canyon. The water then gets piped to the North Rim and South Rim.
Work began in January to replace a half-mile section of a water pipeline near Phantom Ranch.
