Flagstaff experienced a rare May snowstorm on May 8, 2015.

Snow is falling in the Arizona high country. Forecasters say this May snowstorm should stick around through Saturday.

While snow in May isn’t unheard of in northern Arizona, meteorologists say storms like this only occur about once every five years.

Tom Clements is with the National Weather Service. He said snow showers are impacting elevations of 6,500 feet and higher right now.

"Snow levels are expected to come down even more as this upper level storm system comes over the area tonight," he said. "Snow levels could drop as low as 6,000 feet with some places getting a couple of inches of snow accumulation."

Current temperatures are about 15 to 20 degrees below normal but Clements added warmer and drier conditions should return to the forecast by early next week.
