Despite the cooler temperatures, the annual ban of open fires in Phoenix ’s mountain and desert preserves will begin Friday.
The city of Phoenix , along with the Phoenix Fire Department, will institute the ban in preparation for low humidity and higher temperatures which increase the risk of fires.
Gregg Bach with Phoenix Parks and Recreation said there will be a ban on wood and charcoal fires, but cigarettes also pose a dangerous threat.
“You know, if somebody is smoking in their car, use your ashtray in the car. Don’t flick the cigarette butt out the window. There’s certainly not anything more dangerous than that,” Bach said.
The fire ban will apply to desert preserves such as Camelback Mountain and Papago Park . The ban does not apply to other traditional city parks.
Other parks implementing the ban include: all areas of the Phoenix Mountains , South Mountain Park, North Mountain and surrounding areas, the Sonoran Preserve, and the Deem Hills area.
