Arizona's Energy-Efficient Plate Program allows eligible plug-in hybrid electric vehicles unrestricted access to the HOV lanes in Arizona.

A state program is no longer issuing special license plates for energy-efficient vehicles.

The Department of Transportation said it has finished distributing 1,800 license plates that became available in May 2014 as previous owners turned in plates due to reasons that included moving out of state and selling qualifying vehicles.

The department said that means the program has reached its limit of 10,000 license plates and is now suspended until further notice.

The program enables vehicle owners to use freeways' HOV lanes during rush hours regardless of the number of passengers.

The department said it'll continue to update its list of eligible vehicles pending the program's resumption.

Meanwhile, vehicle owners who already have energy-efficient plates can transfer the plates to other qualifying vehicles they own while the program is suspended.
