The fate of a 13-percent budget override for the Peoria Unified School District is now in the hands of area voters. The district’s governing board voted unanimously Thursday to put the question on the November 3 ballot.
Spokeswoman Danielle Airey said 10 percent of the funds would be allocated to maintain existing areas, such as school nurses and reading programs. She said 3 percent would go to additional programs such as full-day kindergarten at district elementary schools.
"If this initiative is not successful next fall, the district certainly would have to revisit all options for reducing its budget to get to that $17.8 million and would have to consider what we might do to make some of those pretty deep cuts," Airey said.
The move follows the district’s recent consideration of adopting a four-day school week to deal with budget cuts.
