Consolidation Of Tucson Postal Facility Postponed

The Tucson postal processing center has gotten a temporary reprieve. The center was scheduled for closure in July as part of the U.S. Postal Service’s nationwide consolidation plan.

The scheduled closure is the second phase of the consolidation. That would move the processing of packages coming to and from Tucson and letters arriving in Tucson to the Phoenix facility.

The Arizona Daily Star reports the Postal Service has extended the timeline originally planned for this summer.

The U.S. Postal Service said in an email statement that planned consolidation will resume in 2016. More than 250 employees work at the processing facility.

Tucson is one of more than 80 sites to be consolidated as mail volume has declined, according to a USPS spokesman.

Meanwhile, southern Arizona congressional representatives are lobbying the postal service to keep the Tucson facility open.
