Hiking Safety Pilot Project Launched At Humphrey's Peak In Arizona

Humphreys Peak in Arizona.

Hikers hoping to summit Humphrey's Peak in Northern Arizona this summer will be seeing a new group of volunteers at the trailhead. It's part of a pilot project the U.S. Forest Service is trying to reduce the number of search and rescues needed on the trail.

The project is a collaboration between the Forest Service, the volunteer group Friends of Northern Arizona Forests and students in a Northern Arizona University wilderness management class.

Dr. Marty Lee, a forestry professor at NAU, explained that every Friday, Saturday and Sunday this summer, a group will be stationed at the trailhead talking with people about how prepared they are for the hike up Arizona’s highest peak.

"And they’ll be talking to folks about the trail, trail conditions, ask them if they’re ready, you know, if they have enough water and foot gear," said Lee.

Lee said officials will be prepared with alternative trail suggestions if hikers seem unsure about their abilities. She adds if the program is successful, the Forest Service will consider expanding it to other trails.
