University Of Arizona Planning Layoffs

TUCSON — Officials at the University of Arizona are planning layoffs to help deal with budget cuts.

The Arizona Daily Star reported the Arizona Board of Regents' finance committee Wednesday approved a $1.9 billion operating budget for the university and its two medical schools.

The budget calls for the university to internally cut or reallocate more than $43 million this upcoming school year, including the $28 million funding cut recently imposed by the Legislature.

The university's finance officer Gregg Goldman said the school will have to make cuts to its staff.

A spokesman for the university said a list of which positions or programs will be cut will be available in August.

A final vote on the budget is expected Thursday when the Regents' full board meets at the university.
