California Recycling Company Sues Arizona Can Collector

A California recycling company is trying a new tactic to stop aluminum cans from Arizona ending up California. California-based SA Recycling is suing Arizona-based HD Recycling for illegally returning Arizona aluminum beverage cans in California for state refunds.

California has a state-run program that pays recyclers for each can they bring into a recycling center. As KJZZ reported in May 2014, the problem is there is no way to tell where the cans comes from, and multiple Arizona recyclers are taking cans into California and claiming refunds.

The California Legislature passed a law last year that limits the daily amount of cans that can be redeemed.

SA Recycling is asking the court to stop HD Recycling from doing business and to be awarded damages. HD Recycling has not publicly responded to the suit.
