Hopi Artifacts Sold At Paris Auction Despite Opposition From Tribe, Arizona Leaders

An auction house in Paris sold another set of Hopi artifacts Wednesday. It was the second sale of its kind this month.

Members of the Hopi tribe traveled to Paris earlier this week to protest the auction of eight items. Tribal officials said the objects, known as "Kachina Friends," hold religious significance to many tribal members.

The tribe’s effort to repatriate the items has received support from Arizona’s congressional delegation and other Southwestern tribes.

Auction house officials said they see no problem with the auctions, insisting it’s legal under French law.

Yesterday’s auction results suggest one item sold for more than $84,000.
