Pima Community College is moving to make up for lost tuition and cuts in state funding.
Pima County Community College District board announced a $5-per-credit hour tuition increase for in-state students in mid-March. Now, the governing board is raising taxes, to fund its nearly $259 million budget for the coming school year.
The Arizona Daily Star said the tax increase will hike taxes on a $100,000 home by $3.45 per year.
The budget also calls for a hiring freeze to save $1 million dollars and administrative cuts to save $800,000.
The tax and tuition hikes are expected to bring in about the same amount as the district lost in state funding, but it’s also trying to make up for the loss of about 5,000 full-time students since 2011.
