Man Who Shot Navajo Nation Officer Faces Life In Prison

A man who shot a Navajo Nation police officer in the head has pleaded guilty to discharging a firearm in a violent crime.

Officer Joseph Gregg survived the shooting last October in the Navajo community of Kaibeto where he was responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Raymond Herder entered his plea in federal court this month after earlier pleading not guilty in the case. Under an agreement with prosecutors, a charge of assault with intent to commit murder will be dropped.

Authorities said Gregg fired his service weapon after Herder opened the door brandishing a shotgun. An exchange of gunfire left both with head injuries.

Herder will have to serve a minimum of 10 years in prison, with the possibility of a life term. Sentencing is scheduled Aug. 24.
