First Excessive Heat Warning Issued For Phoenix Metro

The 100-degree weather of summer will be sticking around. The first excessive heat warning has been issued for Tuesday.

Dan Leins with the National Weather Service said the heat warning has been delayed by two weeks compared to the normal average issue date.

“So, it’s maybe a little bit later than what we’ve seen in previous years, but nonetheless the heat is just the same," Leins said. "It’s still above 110 and 115 degrees in some spots. Even though it’s a little bit later this year, it’s still just as dangerous."

Other extreme weather associated with summer is also beginning.

As monsoon season starts today, storms are forecast in Tucson and Flagstaff. Leins said there’s no chance for a storm in the Valley today.

“There’s more moisture in place in those areas than we have down here," Leins said. "The atmosphere is very dry and very unfavorable for storms down here in the lower deserts. Whereas it’s a little bit more favorable across northern Arizona and southeast Arizona."

He said the whole state is expected to dry out by Tuesday. An excessive heat warning has been put in place starting tomorrow at 10 a.m.
