Flagstaff, Hopi Tribe Work Toward Settlement In Lawsuit Over Water For Snowbowl

FLAGSTAFF — The city of Flagstaff and the Hopi Tribe are working toward a settlement in a lawsuit that claims the city's decision to sell treated wastewater to a ski resort causes a public nuisance.

The Arizona Snowbowl has used the water to make snow since 2012 as a way to extend its ski season.

The lawsuit filed by the Hopi Tribe says the water sale interferes with much of the public's ability to enjoy life or property. Tribes have argued for years that artificial snow negatively will impact people and plants.

The city said Monday that the tribe's lawsuit is on hold for about 60 days as a settlement is negotiated. Any agreement would have to be approved by the City Council in a public session.
