Employees at Intel Corp.’s campus in Chandler could lose their jobs this year as part of a company-wide round of layoffs following a disappointing first quarter.
The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company, which is one of the world’s largest semiconductor chip makers, has remained tight-lipped, but internal memos recently leaked to The Oregonian confirmed the job cuts.
In the memos, Intel did not disclose how many jobs the layoffs will entail, but CEO Brian Krzanich said generally “no more than a few hundred employees” will be impacted at any site.
That could include the company’s mega-campus in Chandler, where it employs roughly 11,000 people.
News of the cuts broke around the same time PetSmart Inc. confirmed earlier this week that 15 percent of employees are being laid off at its Phoenix headquarters. PetSmart declined, however, to say how many actual jobs that translates to.
But unlike Intel, where layoffs are tied to financial performance, PetSmart’s cuts are part of an ongoing restructuring after it accepted a buyout earlier this year and was taken private under new ownership.
