The U.S. Supreme Court this morning unanimously sided with a Valley church over a Gilbert ordinance that put restrictions on the signs the church used to direct worshippers to services.
The Good News Presbyterian Church had sued, arguing the town allowed other kinds of signs to be bigger and out for longer than its signs. The high court agreed, overturning lower court rulings. The church’s Pastor, Clyde Reed, said he never dreamed his church’s signs would be a topic before the Supreme Court.
Scottsdale-based Alliance Defending Freedom defended Reed in the case, known as Reed v. Town of Gilbert. Jeremy Tedesco is ADF’s Senior Legal Counsel.
Gilbert and other towns across the country will presumably now be looking at and changing their codes dealing with signs. We also talked to Gilbert Town Attorney Michael Hamblin.
