Glendale wants to avoid paying the Arizona Coyotes hockey team a $3.75 million quarterly installment. The motion was filed in court less than a week after an order temporarily keeping the lease agreement between the two parties in place.
That temporary restraining order didn’t address the payment issue.
The order reinstates the lease agreement between Glendale and the hockey team until another hearing later in the summer. The contract said the city is to pay the Coyotes $3.75 million in July for the past three months of managing the arena.
“We expect the City of Glendale to honor its contractual commitments," The Coyotes said in a statement. "We intend to continue to honor ours."
The city is arguing it shouldn’t have to make its upcoming payment because of the obligation to avoid using public funds to pay a void contract. But the judge’s order last week kept the contract in place until the end of July.
The next hearing is scheduled for June 29.
