A 31-year-old soldier from Oro Valley died during a training exercise near Seoul, South Korea.
Military officials said Specialist Michael Corey, who was in Army intelligence, died in the field during a training exercise for non-commissioned officers.
Corey’s parents told the Arizona Daily Star he was by himself during a mission, in which he had been given a compass and a map, when he fell and hit his head. His mother, Mary Corey, said her son was found by Korean nationals.
The military said in a statement Corey died during "land navigation training," and the cause of his death was not known. His mother said an investigation into her son’s death is expected to be completed in August.
Corey was a graduate of Canyon del Oro High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona University before joining the Army.
