Celebrate The Summer Solstice This Sunday

The Valley is heading into a weekend of above-average temperatures, just in time for the longest day of the year. This Sunday is the summer solstice, and there are plenty ways to celebrate it indoors.

Around the world, people are welcoming the first official day of summer with dancing, singing and other rituals.

In the same vein, a local druid group is having a night of music, games and potlucking Saturday at the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix.

Sunday has two big solstice events based in Phoenix. Desert Song yoga studio is hosting a fundraiser for Alzheimer’s research, featuring yoga, meditation and tai chi.

And the Burton Barr library will be holding the 20 th annual musical tribute to the solstice in the Great Reading Room. People can hear a few hours of jazz, and when the sun is highest in the sky, sunlight will stream in through skylights and illuminate the room’s tapered columns.
