he State Transportation Board approved Friday a list of highway projects for the next five years. They include the expansion and modernization of highway across the state, including the Valley.
The 2016-2020 construction program includes the preservation of highways. And a major part of the construction in the state will be in the Pima and Maricopa County area.
In the Valley, the Loop 303 will be extended south of I-10 in Goodyear. There will be a widening and improvement project on the I-10, from 32nd street through the Loop 202 San Tan Freeway. And construction of the South Mountain Freeway will start in early 2016.
“The Maricopa and Pima County regions are the two major metropolitan areas in the state that have independent revenue streams," said Dustin Krugel, spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Transportation. "It allows for more of the expansion projects.”
The three projects are estimated to cost a total of about $1.86 billion.
